Women Accuse Julio Iglesias of Abuse in Dominican Republic

Two women have filed a lawsuit against Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, accusing him of harassment and assault in 2021. Amnesty International reports this. According to the women, they worked at his properties in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. They allege that Iglesias subjected them to various forms of violence—sexual, psychological, physical, and economic. He allegedly checked their cell phones, forbade them from leaving the house, and forced them to work up to 16 hours a day without days off or a contract. On January 5, facts that could constitute human trafficking, sexual harassment, and assault, as well as crimes against workers' rights, were presented to the Spanish Prosecutor's Office. One of the women stated she is doing this for three reasons: for herself, for other women working in his homes, and for her country—the Dominican Republic. She wants him to understand that he cannot do whatever he wants without consequences. The other stated she is doing this so that no other woman will suffer this type of abuse. The women said they remained silent for about five years out of fear of retaliation, lack of safe reporting channels, and a culture that has historically dismissed and discredited survivors' voices. One of the women referred to the singer's residence in Punta Cana as the 'house of horror.' They also claim they were forced to undergo medical examinations, including gynecological check-ups, pregnancy tests, and HIV tests. Amnesty International Spain has supported the women and called for an investigation. Attempts to get a comment from Iglesias's circle have been unsuccessful.
