The president of the World Association of Jurists, Javier Cremades, warns that the threat to the rule of law is real in today's democracies where freedoms are being violated. In the complex current world, he emphasizes that autocracies have abused our informational freedoms and that even democracies have polarized to the point of becoming their own enemy.
In the context of the World Congress of Law in Santo Domingo, with delegations from 82 countries and 300 panelists, crucial topics such as misinformation, polarization, and the importance of connecting with the current issues facing humanity will be addressed. Cremades highlights that this congress is not merely technical but seeks to provide the vision of jurists on the challenges society faces today.
The motto of the event, "against the empire of force, the empire of law," emphasizes the importance of promoting a culture of respect for the law to strengthen the rule of law. Cremades emphasizes that it is not enough to have a good Constitution and functional institutions, but it is necessary to involve the population in the process to avoid disenchantment and disconnection with the system.
Among the topics to be discussed at the forum are cybersecurity, sustainability, democracy, the rule of law, international criminal justice, human rights, and bioethics. The presence of delegations from various countries is expected, highlighting the participation of figures such as Sonia Sotomayor from the United States and Norma PiƱa from Mexico. According to Cremades, this congress is compared to a "Legal Olympics" as it brings together key players such as judges, lawyers, professors, heads of state, and civil society in a space for open and deep discussion on the legal and ethical challenges of today's world.
