Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Dominican Republic, underscoring the importance of this agreement to strengthen the trade relationship between both countries. This agreement plays a key role in incentivizing investments and facilitating market expansion, consolidating TAMIU as an educational benchmark in the border region.
The signing of the memorandum was attended by representatives from both institutions, as well as the Consul General of Mexico in Laredo, Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez. This agreement will allow the Dominican Republic to continue collaborating with TAMIU on joint programs aimed at modernizing its border crossings, among other aspects of information exchange and educational programs related to international business and language learning.
María Eugenia Calderón-Porter, Assistant Vice President for Global Initiatives at TAMIU, has been a key figure in consolidating the university's Binational Center as a reference point in education and diplomacy. Through her leadership, academic and commercial collaboration between the United States, Mexico, and other countries in Latin America has been strengthened.
Additionally, TAMIU hosts the U.S. Customs International Trade Center of Excellence, training specialists in foreign trade and customs, and developing innovative programs that promote academic and commercial exchange in the border region. The renewal of this agreement reflects the commitment of Calderón-Porter and TAMIU to strengthening international ties and creating bilingual professionals prepared for global challenges.
On the other hand, the Dominican Republic participates in the Free Trade Agreement between the Dominican Republic, Central America, and the United States (DR-CAFTA), an agreement that seeks to boost trade among the signatory countries. Despite the economic benefits generated by this treaty, it has been the subject of criticism and debate regarding its repercussions on the local economy and the competitiveness of various productive sectors.
In summary, the relationship between TAMIU and the Dominican Republic, as well as participation in DR-CAFTA, marks a milestone in international education and cross-border collaboration, strengthening the foundations for economic and educational development in the region.
